"I like the Journal very much because it is quite informative," writes reader
Joycean Liu from Beijing, China, who suggests that we include more articles
about the Westerners' views and understanding of go. "I find articles like "THE
EMPTY BOARD: Language Games" by William Cobb quite interesting and would like
more of such sorts of essays," says Liu, noting that such cultural coverage
could attract go players and non-go-players alike.
"Re your article about Eric Cotsen (COTSEN TRAVELS, 2/19), I suspect that that
the display is per Eric's father, Eric Cotsen," writes Larry Gross. ?Eric Cotsen
the go player is Eric Lloyd Cotsen and has no interest in baskets that I am
aware. The father, Eric Cotsen has had a long term interest in art and
architecture. His father gave a wing to the Santa Fe Folk Art Museum and has
contributed to various other museums."

MEMBERSHIP, READERSHIP UP AGAIN: Membership in the American Go Association
nudged up again last month, hitting another record high of 1,687 members and
extending to nine months the streak of membership increases. Fifty new Full
members and twenty five Limited members joined in February, and a new Life
Member brought the total Life Memberships to 27, an all-time high. Chapter
memberships bumped up as well, to 87. E-Journal readership continued to soar,
now reaching over 5,500 readers worldwide and growing at more than fifty new
subscribers a week. The AGA is now the largest go association in the Western
world, with Germany close behind with about 1600 and then France with 1200. The
Netherlands has about 900, while Romania has around 700. The United Kingdom
recently passed the 600 mark. All others are much smaller, according to the

EMPTY SKY GO CLUB GETS LITERARY: Members of Rochester's Empty Sky Go Club
conducted a 1-hour introduction to go as part of the Rochester Public Library's
Tuesday Topics series on February 25. Twenty eight hardy Rochesterians braved
last week's snowy and icy weather to learn about go. "One of the missions of the
Friends of the Rochester Public Library is to keep the library a cultural and
resource center for the community," said Bill Pontius, who chairs the Tuesday
Topics series and who praised the "interactive" presentations by Empty Skyers
Bill Hewitt and Jeremy Banzhaf. The Among the questions answered was the meaning
of the Rochester club's name ("Empty Sky" is taken from an old Japanese song
that refers to "clear thinking"). Club coordinators considering such
presentations will want to make sure they have handouts about the basics of go,
go sets for demonstration and participation, and flyers about your club.

KEIGO YOUNGEST KISEI: Yamashita Keigo 7P has defeated O Rissei 9P to become the
youngest Kisei in history. Yamashita won 4-1, taking the last game by 1.5 points

REDMOND, NAIWEI OPPONENTS SETTLED: It's been settled that Michael Redmond 9
dan's opponent in the second round of the Gosei Tournament will be either Otake
Hideo 9 dan or Cho Chikun 9 dan. Either of these strong contenders of the older
generation will be a great opponent. Otake is 60 and Cho (a pro from the age of
11) is 46, while Redmond is 39. It's also been settled that Rui Naiwei 9 dan's
opponent in the finals of the new international women's tournament, the
Jeongganjang Cup, will be Zhang Xiang 8 dan of China. Zhang has won several
titles in recent years and is married to one of China's strongest pros, Chang
Hao 9 dan. A pair's match of these two with their husbands would be something to
see. (Rui is married to Jiang Zhujiu "Jujo" 9 dan.)
149 MAGIC NUMBER IN LG CUP: In a surprising coincidence, the first two games of
the current LG Cup title match between Yi Setol (Lee Sedol) 3P and Yi Ch'angho
(Lee Changho) 9P both were won by Black by resignation in 149 moves. Setol is
considered the greatest go prodigy since Ch'angho. He will be 20 on March 2nd.

GAME COMMENTARY: The Tenuki Joseki
"The one space low pincer can lead to many different joseki," says Liping Huang
in today?s game commentary. Including, in this case, a tenuki by Huiren Yang,
1p, who takes black and skillfully manages the fierce battles that follow with
I-Han Lui, AGA 7.7d in Round 1 of the 2003 Fujitsu Qualifying Tournament, played
January 6 on the IGS.
"White's corner has a lot of eye space, but it doesn't have two eyes yet," says
Yilun Yang in the Intermediate tsume-go problem, one of Mr. Yang's set of three
problems we're pleased to present for the second consecutive month in the

GO ONLINE: A World of Game Records

Did you know that game records cannot be copyrighted? The matter has seldom if
ever been litigated, but prominent legal theorists in the area of intellectual
property consider it analogous to a recording of a historical event. For
example, the President cannot copyright the State of the Union address. Also,
since game records are the product of two competing creators, neither of whom
can claim exclusive authorship, no one can copyright them.
Commentary, analysis, and diagrams of variations can be copyrighted by the
author, and collections of games are also considered proprietary, but the
records themselves immediately enter the public domain. Those interested in the

Whatever the legality of the matter, the fact is that thousands of game records
are available on the Internet. You should know that "bootleg" commented game
records game collections may also appear on the Net, but to our knowledge none
of the sites mentioned below contain illicit material. As far as we know, all
the records noted below are in .sgf format.
Let's begin with a trip to Jon Van Rongen's "Friday Night Files" site at

Van Rongen's site appears to be a Cho Chikun freak -- you will find over 1400 of
Cho's games here. He is also especially interested in the career of an
up-and-coming young Japanese pro named Yamashita Keigo, who developed skills at
the Ryokusei Igo Gakuen Go Academy, which is well-known for its students'
successes in recent years, and for having been founded by an amateur player.
An especially interesting feature of Van Rongen's site is a collection of game
records from actual professional games that are used in the Hikaru No Go anime
series. (Sidebar to those who enjoy the HNG fansubs but haven't looked lately:

Momoyama has pages for all the major Japanese, Chinese, Korean and International

search-by-pattern program endorsed by Michael Redmond. The downloadable demo
includes 800 pro games featuring the san-ren-sei (three star points) opening.

I know some of you like to look at amateur games as well. I've never understood
that way of thinking -- I'd rather see good moves than learn why bad moves are
wrong. If I want to see stupid moves, I'll just play a game myself! But the Go

So now that you've got all these records, what can you do with them? I went to
the TurboGo home page and downloaded the Go Screensaver. (Click on "Go
Screensaver" at http://www.turbogo.com/) Put the records you like all in a
directory and point the screen saver at that directory. When your computer is
idle, your mind can be active as you watch each game progress, trying to guess
the next move. It's the next best thing to studying while you sleep!
